"In Salaam-E-Ishq I play this wannabe, an item girl who just wants 2 become successful so desperately. My character is a funny, sassy, saucy screwball. n yes, I had loads of fun doing d role. It's an ensemble cast. But I'd like 2 believe my track wit Salman is special."
Priyanka also teams up wit Salman in her other early-2007 release. "God Tussi Great Ho is another comedy. n yes, Mr Bachchan—who else! -- plays God. I guess it's time for me 2 let my hair down n enjoy myself. It’s writer Rumi Jaffrey's debut film as a director."

Two forthcoming films wit Salman, n still rumours of a serious rift between d two persist. It's said he insisted on Katrina Kaif instead of Priyanka for Raj Kumar Santoshi's London Dreams.
  "What bunk!" Priyanka howls. "I couldn't do London Dreams only because of date problem. Salman n I get along well enough. You've 2 see our on-screen chemistry in Salaam-e-Ishq n God, Tussi Great Ho."
  People r whispering about d off-screen chemistry between Priyanka n d new kick on d block Harman Baweja especially since she stepped in as a last-minute replacement for Kareena in Harman's debut film Love Story 2050.
  "The only reason I did Love Story 2050 was my role. I get 2 do my first double role. n d two characters, specially d second one will make people sit up n notice. If styling is essential 2 d characterizations these days, then Love Story 2050 has got d formula right. As for stepping into d film so late, I'd always stand bi a friend. Why only Harman, I'd bail out any of my friends on a crisis. Just try me."
One doesn’t see him socializing at filmy parties or attending premieres nor is he spotted gracing media wit catchy sound bytes, n yet Mani Ratnam is one of those rarest of filmmakers who is most sought after bi d artistes, d media n of course, his fans.
The reticet Mani Sir (as he is fondly known as) is now in Mumbai. We cornered him for an exclusive chat. Read on as he talks about Guru — d film, d actors, d controversies n much more.

How did d seed of Guru germinate?

It is something like you think is a film material. n one gets a spirit of a character at a time when India is changing. Through one character
you can see d change in d entire country. Then it be-comes an interesting film 2 put across.

Your films have derived inspiration from d lives of well-known people like Nayakan, Iruvar n now Guru, which apparently is based on Dhirubhai Ambani’s life.
See, Roja also had a real-life scenario wit a wife appealing for her kidnapped husband’s safety n so was Kannathil Muthamittal. Emotions r around you n that is where you pick up your subjects from. A lot of stories have a real-life feel n r related 2 common man.

Guru is based in Gujarat n Abhishek being called Gurubhai, which rhymes wit Dhirubhai. Isn’t that too much of a coincidence?
This may be because d people who these characters r compared wit r high profile. That’s why d spotlight is on them. My other films too had leaves from real life but only weren’t as well-known. The chemistry of d main leads is one of d highlights of your films. Will Guru be in d same league?
Abhishek n Aishwarya r doing extremely well. If your characters r clear n strong n your actors r good, d results will be as effective if not more.

But Ash-Abhishek have failed 2 sizzle together onscreen?

I’ve no apprehensions. Ash n Abhishek’s equation, d struggle n strength they derive from each other in d film is very real. d mood n their actions r just right. They look like people who lived through those times.

You chose exotic item girls. From Sonu Walia (Dalpati), Sonali Bendre (Bombay), Malaika Arora-Khan (Dil Se) 2 Mallika Sherawat now.

As a filmmaker you’re very selfish n tend 2 see what’s right for d film. d choices haven’t been very conscious but yes, d end results might come out very well because they suit d mood of d song n d setting.

Have you seen any of Mallika’s earlier works?

Yes. A few of them.

Can you name some of them?

(Laughs). It’s not fair.

Guru has been marred wit rumours of Viveik Oberoi n John Abrham opting out 2 Vidya Balan being unhappy wit her role. Comment.

I am here 2 make a film n rumours don’t bother me. I work without compromising on d quality. Filmmaking is a business n is based on equality between two parties. If deals finalise, then fine.

If not, even then it is fine. d equations don’t change. As per d actors, I know all of them individually. I play straight right from d beginning. When one starts working on a script, a lot of names come into play n you discuss them.

Some materialise n some don’t. From day one,both Vidya n I were aware what d role is n how it has shaped. That’s about it.

Viveik opted out because of Ash n Abhishek?

Viveik is a friend, but we didn’t discuss anything in this regard. I haven’t talked about it n so it doesn’t matter.

Did Abhishek find it difficult 2 work wit d non-Hindi speaking crew?

There weren’t any problems. At d end of d day, all of them learnt Tamil (laughs).

The sensibilities of Tamil cinema n that of a regular Bollywood film r drastically different. How do you balance between both of them?

The sensibilities r not very different. It is just d finer details that matter. When one makes a film for a wider audience, d tendency is 2 get general but even then, one can work on details

Box office success has eluded you in Hindi films.

As a filmmaker you have 2 learn 2 cope up wit success n non-success. If you have made a film n it doesn’t work, it doesn’t mean that it has dropped in its standard. d box-office result is just an addition.

Do you follow d work of other filmmakers?

Yes, I do. I watched Omkara n Rang De Basanti. These films belonged 2 d mainstream n entertainment but still a lot of realism was a part of them. I haven’t watched Munnabhai though I plan 2 do that soon.

You r known for using novel techniques like sync sound, backlighting n experimenting wit props. What will Guru have in store?

There is no end 2 technique. It is just a tool used for storytelling. It is a process bi itself n not d result. I haven’t made use of them deliberately; I use them in my process of presenting my idea.

A whole lot of your films have a subtle political undercurrent 2 them.

When I make films, it’s about sharing of thoughts but I am making no statements. I don’t think films bring in revolution but if it happens, then it’s fine. I don’t wear it on my sleeve nor am I ashamed of it.

Which is your best work till date?

None. It is yet 2 come (laughs).

Finally, what r your expectations from Guru?

When you make a film, you want 2 reach d people wit a work that’s good quality- wise n is market sensible.
